タイ女子ゴルフ協会設立メンバー。クイーンシリキットカップ創設などアジア太平洋地域の女子ゴルフ発展に寄与
１９７９年にタイでスタートしたクイーンシリキットカップは、女子アマチュアゴルファーのアジア太平洋地区で唯一、かつ最大の公式国別団体戦だ。世界に羽ばたくトップゴルファーの登竜門となり、２０２５年には第４５回大会が日本で開催される。タイ女子ゴルフ協会の設立メンバーで、同カップ創設時からコーディネーターとして先頭に立ってアジア太平洋地域の女子ゴルフ発展に大きく寄与したスワン氏に、同大会創設の経緯や今後の女子ゴルフについて聞いた。
王宮に要請 シリキット王妃の名前で優勝杯
――クイーンシリキットカップを始めようとしたきっかけを教えてください。
私は３０代前半くらいからゴルフを始め、ロイヤル・バンコク・スポーツ・クラブの大会委員となってからはチームを率いて海外にも遠征しました。その中で、タイでも海外の人たちを呼んでプレーしてもらったらどうだろうと思い始めました。国際的なフィールドに、もっと関わりたいと思うようになったきっかけです。当時はアジア地域でナショナルチームレベルの国際ゴルフトーナメントがなく、優秀な選手が海外で他国の選手と交流する機会がないと感じていました。そのような大会を創設するのであれば、名誉あるものにしたいと思い、王宮に要請してシリキット王妃の名前で優勝杯を授与する許可を得ることができ、ゴルフ界で彼女の名を冠した唯一のカップとなっています。
――大会を立ち上げるにあたり、課題はありましたか。
第１回大会はタイのナバタニー・ゴルフコースで行うことになり、１４カ国のゴルフ協会に招待状を送りましたが、最初に招待を受けてくれたのは８カ国でした。当時トップクラスだった日本も、招待を受けてくれませんでした。そのためタイの選手の夫を日本に派遣しました。その方は東京に住んでいた経験があり、日本語も話すことができ、ＪＧＡ（日本ゴルフ協会）を訪問して大会の目的や成り立ちを説明すると、９カ国目のチームとして参加することに同意してくれたのです。第１回大会を優勝した日本は、それから一度も欠場したことはありません。オーストラリアやニュージーランドなどにも参加してもらおうとしましたが、移動やコストの問題で受け入れてくれるところが少なかったのは課題でした。ただ、オーストラリアはインドネシアで開催された第２回大会から参加してくれました。
参加チームの安全への配慮は、大会の重要な特徴であり課題の一つでした。２００８年の第３０回大会はスリランカで行われるはずだったのが、内政不安から安全面で大きな懸念があり、開催地を他国に移さざるを得ませんでした。その時にＪＧＡが早々にホストを引き受けてくれて、日本で開催することができました。袖ヶ浦カンツリークラブだったと思います。そのときのＪＧＡの親切な対応には今でも感謝しています。
女性のための大会をどのように開催すべきか 差別や制限の障害を乗り越えて
――これほどの大会を開催するとなると、多くの困難もあったと思います。一番大変だったことは何ですか。
５０年ほど前のタイでは、ゴルフをする女性は外交官の奥様などに限られていました。会員制クラブでは仕事を終えた男性がゴルフをする時間を確保するために、女性は午後４時以降と午前中の特定の時間帯はプレーが禁じられていました。また、ゲストをクラブに招くには委員会の許可が必要で、パブリックコースはそこまでの制限はなかったと思いますが、女性に限らず一般の人がゴルフをできる時代ではありませんでした。だから私たちは、国内だけではなく国際的にも今までになかった女性のための大会をどのように開催すべきかを考え、努力をしなければならなかったのです。差別や制限の障害を乗り越えるため、ゴルフ界に強力な後ろ盾を持つ女性たちに協力を仰いだり、今はもうこのような差別は見られないですが、それでも女性たちはそれなりに苦労があると思います。
――大会をこれほど長く続けられているモチベーションは何ですか。
ひとつは、ゴルフというゲームが、それに関わった多くの人々に新しい機会と利益をもたらすことを実感できるからだと思います。トーナメントの目的は参加選手同士の友情やスポーツマンシップを促進することです。この大会に参加した選手たちは、多くの国から集まった多くの友人たちと一緒にプレーすることがとても特別で、記憶に残るような素晴らしいものになると思います。スポーツマンシップも同様で、ゴルファーとして社会に貢献することを考えるようになるでしょう。私もゴルフ協会や関係者の方々と接するうちに、たくさんの友人を得ることができました。だから自分が始めたことが徐々に大きくなり、それが選手たちの将来のキャリアに繋がっているのを目の当たりにすることができ、モチベーションそのものになっていると思います。
2025年の第45回大会は日本で16年ぶり4度目の開催
――クイーンシリキットカップは来年に第４５回大会が日本で開催されます。日本での開催に期待することはありますか。
ＪＧＡには何度かホストをしていただき、ガイドライン等も非常に明確です。これまでの大会も、第１回大会から参加してきた日本の経験に基づいている部分が大きいので、今回もそのような学びが多くあると思います。
――日本での開催は４回目ですが、１９８１年の第３回大会（セントラルＧＣ）はオーストラリア、９５年の第１７回大会（習志野ＣＣ）と２００８年の第３０回大会（袖ヶ浦ＣＣ）はいずれも韓国が優勝しています。日本は開催国として勝ったことがありません。
過去２３度優勝して３連覇を目指す韓国は、女子ゴルフ界がかなり潤って、発展しています。新しい選手を育て、他の国がジュニアや代表選手の育成に力を入れ始めるきっかけをつくることは非常に大切なことだと思っています。
――韓国に限らず、アジアの女子ゴルファーが世界的なレベルで活躍している理由は何だと思いますか。
試合の数が多いからこそ、より多くの選手を派遣して競技に参加させ、経験を積ませることができるからだと思います。いまだにお金持ちのスポーツというイメージがあるゴルフは、練習することも容易ではなく、うまくなる前に諦めてしまうことも多い中で、韓国や日本、オーストラリアの選手は多くのサポートや機会を与えられていて、ジュニアは特にそうです。親は子供がゴルフに取り組むことで未来が明るく開け、将来はプロになったり、ゴルフ関係の仕事に就いたりする機会ができると考えてサポートします。さらに私たちの国では日本や韓国、アメリカ、ヨーロッパ、そして中国からも多くのゴルファーがやって来て試合を戦い、それが一層の魅力となって賞金額も増え、急速な進歩につながっています。
――ＪＧＡゴルフ振興推進本部では、女性がゴルフに接する機会を一層増やしたいという思いから「女性とゴルフ部会」を立ち上げています。女性がゴルフを知り、始める動機についてはどのように考えていますか。
まず、お手本となるような選手がいることで、プレーに対するモチベーションが高まると思います。そのような選手たちが模範となることで、若い世代も刺激を受け、それに続くことができます。さらに、親も自分の子供にゴルフを始めさせたいと思う機会が増えるのではないでしょうか。また、趣味としてゴルフを楽しみ、そのことを発信する女性芸能人や歌手もいます。それを見てファッションを真似したり、ゴルフをやってみたいと思う女性もいます。
ジュニアゴルファーはアジアの女子ゴルフの未来
――特にジュニア層は彼女たちから多くの刺激を受けそうですね。
ゴルフの未来はジュニアとともにあります。ジュニアゴルフは今やタイやその他の国でも最大のトレンドとなっていると思いますし、ジュニアゴルファーはアジアの女子ゴルフの未来です。女性もそうですが、ゴルフがジュニア層全体に魅力的なスポーツになっていけばと思っています。
――コロナ禍では世界中でゴルフを始めた人が増えました。この状態を維持するとともに、新規ゴルファーを増やすためには何が必要で、課題だと考えますか。
ゴルフに様々な形で触れられる機会を増やすことでしょう。ゴルフはとてもお金がかかるスポーツで、タイにゴルフ基金を設立したのは、そのためです。新規ゴルファーを増やすために道具を提供し、無料でコーチを受けられる機会をつくり、誰でも参加できるような試合の開催などは、私たちがやりたいことの一つです。また、ゴルフ場のグリーンフィーを安くし、レディースデーなどを作って特別料金でプレーできるようにすることも、ゴルフを普及させる方法の一つだと思います。女子プロに来てもらい、初心者にグリップやスイングなど基本的なことを教えてもらうプロジェクトも考えています。そのような些細なことでも、彼ら、彼女らをゲームに引き込み、興味を持ってもらう試みは大切です。
――ゴルフの初心者、またはこれから始めようとしている人へのアドバイスは。
ゴルフがうまくなりたいのであれば、近道はありません。まず基礎の部分から勉強を始め、練習もただボールを打つのではなく、考えながらやることで成長します。そして最も重要なことは、ゴルフは正直さを競うゲームだということです。自分にも他人にも正直でなければいけないことを、忘れてはいけません。
――最後に、これからクイーンシリキットカップに出場する女性ゴルファーたちにメッセージをお願いします。
忍耐強く、一生懸命に練習し、学ぶことをやめず、競争心を止めないことが大切です。私たちはタイの選手が大会を通じて成長し、好成績を残していることをとても嬉しく思っていて、だからこそ新人たちにはそれらの選手の成功に目を向けるように求めることができます。クイーンシリキットカップに出場する選手たちは、自分の国を代表することを誇りに思ってください。この大会は、私たちのモットーである「伝説が生まれる場所」です。あなたも、その一人になれるかもしれないのです。

Founding member of the Thailand Women’s Golf Association. Contributed to the development of women’s golf in the Asia-Pacific region, including the establishment of the Queen Sirikit Cup. Interview with Ms. Rae-Vadee T. Suwan
Launched in Thailand in 1979, the Queen Sirikit Cup is the largest official national team championship and the only one for women amateur golfers in the Asia-Pacific region. It has become a gateway to success for top golfers who want to go global, and the 45th championship will be held in Japan in 2025. Ms. Rae-wadee T. Suwan is a founding member of the Thailand Ladies Golf Association who has spearheaded the development of women’s golf in the Asia-Pacific region as a coordinator of the Queen Sirikit Cup since its inception. We interviewed Ms. Suwan about the history of the championship’s establishment and the future of women’s golf.
Request to the Royal Palace for the Winning Cup in H.M. Queen Sirikit’s Name
――What made you decide to start the Queen Sirikit Cup?
I started playing golf in my early thirties or so, and after becoming a member of the tournament committee at the Royal Bangkok Sports Club, I led teams to compete in tournaments abroad. In the process, I began to wonder what it would be like to invite people from overseas to play in Thailand as well. This was the beginning of my interest to get more involved in the international field. At the time, there were no national team-level international golf tournaments in the Asian region, and we felt that there were no opportunities for our Thai players to interact with players from other countries. If we were to establish such a tournament, we wanted to make it prestigious, so we made a request to the Royal Palace and obtained permission to award the championship trophy in H.M. Queen Sirikit’s name. This trophy is the only cup ever named after her in golf.
――What have been some of the challenges in establishing and running the Queen Sirikit Cup?
The first tournament was to be held at the Navatanee Golf Course in Thailand, and invitations were sent to golf associations in 14 countries. However, Japan, which was the strongest team with some of the best players at that time, did not accept the invitation. For this reason, we had to ask the husband of a Thai player to visit Japan as he had lived in Tokyo and could speak Japanese. After visiting JGA (Japan Golf Association) and explaining the purpose and origin of the tournament, they agreed to participate as the 9th country team. Japan won the first tournament and has never missed one since then. We tried to get Australia, New Zealand, and other countries to participate, but it was a challenge that few were willing to accept due to travel and cost issues. However, Australia decided to participate in the second tournament held in Indonesia. When Australia played host in the 6th edition, New Zealand team came to join the Championship as a new member and walked away with the winning Cup.
Consideration for the safety of the participating teams was one of the important features and challenges of the tournament, and the 30th tournament in 2008 was supposed to be held in Sri Lanka, but due to major safety concerns from the internal political unrest, the venue had to be moved to another country. Then, JGA quickly came to rescue and agreed to host the event instead in Japan. I think it was at Sodegaura Country Club. I never forget how thankful I felt for JGA’s kind assistance then.
How tournaments for women should be held. Overcoming obstacles of discrimination and restrictions.
――I am sure there were many challenges involved in organizing a tournament of this magnitude. What was the most difficult?
About 50 years ago in Thailand, women who played golf were limited to the wives of diplomats and others. Women were prohibited from playing after 4:00 p.m. and during certain hours in the morning so that men could have time to play golf after work at members-only clubs. Also, inviting guests to the club required permission from the committee, and although public courses did not have such restrictions, it was a time when golf was not available to the general public, not just women. So we had to work hard to figure out how to organize a tournament for women, which had never been done before, not only nationally but also internationally. To overcome the obstacles of discrimination and restrictions, we had to ask for help from women who have strong backing in the golfing circle to be on the organizing committee. Although we don’t see this kind of discrimination much anymore, I think women still have some difficulties to manage on their own without support from the male counterpart.
――What motivates you to continue the tournament for such a long time?
One reason, I think, is that the game of golf brings new opportunities and benefits to the many people involved in it. The purpose of the tournament is to promote friendship and sportsmanship among the participating players. I think it will be very special and memorable for the players participating in this tournament to play with so many friends from so many different countries. The same goes for sportsmanship; as a golfer, you will think about contributing to society. I have also gained many friends through my contact with the many golf associations and the people involved. So I think it is motivation in itself to see what I started gradually grow and see how it can benefit the players to further their future career opportunities.
The 45th Queen Sirikit Cup in 2025 will be held in Japan for the fourth time in 16 Years.
――The 45th Queen Sirikit Cup will be held in Japan next year. What are your expectations for the event to be held in Japan?
JGA has hosted several times and has followed very clear guidelines, etc. Previous championships have also been largely based on Japan’s experience from its participation since the first event, and I believe the next event will be well organized as well.
――This is the fourth time that the event has been held in Japan, however Japan has never won as the host country. Australia won the 3rd event (held at Central GC) in 1981, and Korea won both the 17th at Narashino CC in 1995 and the 30th at Sodegaura CC in 2008. Japan has never won as the host country.
Korea, which has won the championship 23 times in the past and is aiming for a third consecutive title, has a very rich and developing women’s golf industry. It’s a very important for us to develop new players and for other countries to start focusing on the development of junior and national players.
――What do you think is the reason why Asian women golfers, not only from Korea, are performing well on the global stage?
I think it is because there are so many tournaments nowadays such that more players can be sent to compete and gain experience. Golf still has the image of being a rich man’s sport, and while it is not easy to practice and people often give up before they get good, Korean, Japanese, and Australian players are given a lot of support and opportunities, especially junior players. Parents support their children’s commitment to golf because they believe it will open up a bright future for them and give them the opportunity to become professionals or work in the golf industry in the future. Furthermore, in our country of Thailand, many golfers from Japan, Korea, the U.S., Europe, and even China come to play the game, which makes it even more attractive and leads to increased prize money and rapid progress.
――The JGA’s Golf Development Department has established a unit called “Women in Golf” to further increase women’s exposure to golf. What do you think is the motivation for women to learn about and start playing golf?
First of all, I believe that having players who can serve as role models will increase motivation to play. By having such players as role models, the younger generation will be inspired to follow in their footsteps. Furthermore, parents should have more opportunities to encourage their children to take up golf. There are also female entertainers and singers who enjoy golf as a hobby and communicate about it. Some women see this and want to imitate their fashion and try golf.
Junior golfers are the future of Women’s golf in Asia
――I believe the junior class in particular will get a lot of inspiration from these women golfers.
The future of golf is with juniors. I believe that junior golf is now the biggest trend in Thailand and other countries, and junior golfers are the future of women’s golf in Asia. I hope that golf will become an attractive sport for the entire junior population, not just for women.
――The COVID pandemic saw an increase in the number of people who have taken up golf all over the world. What do you think is needed and what are the challenges to maintain this status and continue to increase the number of new golfers?
It would increase exposure to golf in a variety of ways. Golf is a very expensive sport, which is why we established the Golf Foundation in Thailand. Providing equipment to increase the number of new golfers, creating opportunities for free coaching, and organizing matches that anyone can participate in are some of the things we would like to do. Another way to popularize golf is to lower green fees at golf courses and create special rates for ladies’ days. I am also thinking of a project to have ladies professionals come and teach beginners the basics, such as grip and swing. It is important to try to get them interested in the game, even if it is something as basic as that.
――What advice would you give to beginner golfers or those who are just thinking about giving the game a try?
If you want to get better at golf, there are no shortcuts. You will grow by starting to learn the basics first, and by thinking while practicing, rather than just hitting the ball. And most importantly, golf is a game of honesty. You must remember that you must be honest with yourself and with others.
――Finally, do you have a message for the women golfers who will be competing in the Queen Sirikit Cup?
It is important to stay focus, practice hard, never stop learning, and never give up being competitive. Those are the paths for newcomers to achieve good results and success in the competition. The golfers competing in the Queen Sirikit Cup should be proud to represent their country in the Championship. Keep in mind the Queen Sirikit Cup’s motto – where “legends are born”, that you could be one of them.
